I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock and braced myself for the pain I would be feeling soon. This is how I began most mornings - in pain. I've been to many specialists - including neurologists and endocrinologists - but none have given me any relief or answers. They said my symptoms don’t fall under any diagnosis, but that I have characteristics of a disease that causes tremors, extreme muscle stiffness, and can eventually cause paralysis of my lower body. While still in bed, I recalled a conversation with a friend who suggested I try physical therapy to manage my symptoms. I’d always been hesitant to believe PT would actually work, but I knew I didn’t want to live my life in such pain and stiffness anymore and decided to give it a try. That day, I scheduled an appointment with Nadine at Active Solutions Physical Therapy and hoped that the treatments I received would help me feel and move better.
The morning of my appointment, I slowly struggled to walk into Active Solutions Physical Therapy’s office. I felt like my muscles were too tight to even move, and I was afraid that the physical therapy treatments wouldn’t work – or even that they would make things worse. Thankfully, once I met with Nadine, my worries began to ease. I could tell she cared about my situation and knew a lot about various treatments and therapies that could help me.
Nadine used her knowledge about the theory of cryotherapy and its effect on golgi tendon cells when muscles are in spasm to suggest a treatment plan for me. She tried applying cold packs to my lower body and neck to see if it would help release the muscles and allow me to move better. It worked! This gave me hope that having physical therapy with Nadine at Active Solutions would truly help to relieve my symptoms and live a more normal life.
In the following visits, she would apply the cold packs to the painful areas before doing soft tissue work on them and having me do some stretches and exercises. Since my condition has fluctuating symptoms, Nadine works with me by tweaking my treatments to adjust for changes in my body and so that I’ll get just the right amount of exercise. Movement tends to improve my condition, but I get fatigued quickly and become worse if I do too much. Thankfully, Nadine took on the challenge of helping me find the sweet spot – where I get just enough exercise to feel better, but not so much as to make my symptoms worse.
Because the specialists I’ve seen haven’t been able to give a definitive diagnosis and no pharmaceutical cure has been found for my condition, physical therapy has been the most effective treatment for me. Since I’ve been going to physical therapy treatments, I’ve been able to stay out of my wheelchair and continue to live a fairly normal life. I’m grateful I decided to try physical therapy and for the positive impact it’s had on my life.
